The harp of the future: Debussy & Ravel

with Sylvain Blassel harp, Isabelle Moretti harp, the Matangi Quartet and Philip Freriks narrator

The 19th century saw a fierce competition between two rival instrument makers: Erard and Pleyel. Both intended to create the harp of the future. They contacted the two great composers of harp music in France at the time, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, to write music that would promote their instruments. This resulted in, arguably, some of the finest works ever written for the harp. But who won the competition? What instrument made it into the 20th century? Two French top-harpists, Isabelle Moretti and Sylvain Blassel, will settle the dispute once and for all, guided and narrated by – who else? -  Philip Freriks!
